Icons of the Sandhills since the 1920s, each course delivers a memorable golf experience courtesy of Donald Ross, the man who also gave birth to nearby Pinehurst No. 2.Better players particularly will enjoy the challenges of Pine Needles,while recreational golfers may better adapt to Mid Pines’ more forgiving fairways and few water hazards. Both feature Ross’ trademark inverted-saucer greens, placing a premium on a strong short game. The courses offer a variety of tees that make finding a comfortable length a nonissue. Practice areas are serviceable, though not stellar. The condition of each course is neverquestioned regardless of the season, and the pace of play is steady, though slightly quicker at the somewhat less-challenging Mid Pines. “You come here, and by the time you leave they know you and you know them,” he said. “That’s the best thing I can say about this place. It’s like coming home.”
