GOLFING VACATION PINHURST 7

GOLFING VACATION PINHURST 7Located a mile away from the Main Clubhouse, No. 7 is unmistakably Pinehurst, but has a mountainous flavor as well. Uphill shots on eight of the 18 holes require power and pinpoint accuracy. Other interesting features make this a unique addition to the Pinehurst heritage, including vast bunkers that require bold tee shots, wetlands to clear and double doglegs.

It also incorporated some old bunkers Ross put in place years before for an old employee's course - you'll find them beside the tee of the fourth hole. The 18th, a downhill par 5 to a green flanked by water, shows that this course will test your game to the very end...so come prepared.

I think Pinehurst #7 is the best of the Pinehurst golf courses (but I didn't play #8, built after I played there in the early 90s). Pinehurst #6 is a close second. I played the Pinehurst courses on a summer golfing vacation that i desperately needed.

We stayed at one of the villas located on one of the five courses by the main clubhouse. Courses 1 through 5 are located in close proximity to the main clubhouse, while courses 6 and 7 are located about a mile away. We played 36 holes a day for four days, and played all the courses except one. Pinehurst #2 is the most famous course, and is where they played the U.S. Open a few years ago.

Pinehurst #2 is a good course and has a lot of history associated with it, but it doesn't compare to the beauty and layout of Pinehurst #7 (or #6 for that matter). We played Pinehurst #2 one time, and Pinehurst #7 three times, mainly because we liked Pinehurst #7 that much more.Pinehurst #7 is wooded with quite a bit of elevation change. It is a difficult course, especially if you don't hit a long, straight tee ball. Tall pine trees run along almost all the fairways, and a wild hook or slice is almost always lost. The greens and fairways are in perfect condition.

We played from the pro tees one round, and boy was that challenging. I remember the course measuring 7600 yards from the back tees. On the first hole, a par five,

I hit a prefect tee shot and two perfect three-woods to hit the green in regulation. That was one of the few greens I hit in regulation on that golfing vacation, and I didn't break 100. But it was fun.

The main dining facility where we ate most evenings was the Carolina Room. It was very elegant and nice (price was included in our golf package), but by the last day we just ordered some takeout pizza (we could only stand so much of the good life). Another memorable moment occurred when we had played 36 holes, went back to our villa, and decided to play a few holes on the course backed up to our villa. We took three clubs each, and walked out onto the course and played about six holes until dark. True golfers never stop playing.

I would highly recommend taking a golfing vacation to Pinehurst. It wasn't that expensive, and you can pick easy or challenging golf courses to play, all in the most perfect condition imaginable.
